Food circus: Easy, fun, delicious
Although the sweet potato is commonly thought to be a type of potato, and though it looks quite much alike, it does not belong to the same family (Solanaceae) with it. Continue reading “Sweet potato rösti”
Simple is beautiful. And very often the most simple food is also the most delicious. One of these delicacies is broccoli in pine seed butter – this combination of three ingredients truly gives a delightful taste sensation. As one of my daughters said: “Best broccoli ever!”. And by the way, I agree! Continue reading “Broccoli in pine seed butter”
Very cheap but all the more delicious food. Here in Finland pork shank costs about 3 euros/kilo and sauerkraut isn’t that expensive either. One shank and a 400 gr box of sauerkraut with 120 gr of smetana is more than enough for two diners. Continue reading “Pork shank with sauerkraut stew”
I can’t really tell if the recipes published on the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat every Thursday are exceptionally good, and worth testing, or is it simply because of me taking my time to read the paper every time. Probably the latter; world is full of delicious foods and recipes, but you don’t catch them the same way as you do when reading the paper. Even when searching recipes online, you need to know beforehand what you’re looking for. Continue reading “Ajvar sauce”
Once again I’ve been busy with the food pages published every Thursday in Helsingin Sanomat. As said already before I’m not quite sure if the recipes in this newspaper are better than those published in other ones, or if it is simply an easy approach since my husband usually reads Helsingin Sanomat from cover to cover. When he has finished the paper he always brings me the food pages, and more often than not asks whether we could try one of the recipes because it seems so delicious. Continue reading “Lambkin roast with “French fries” made of Halloumi”
Sometime last summer I found a recipe for coriander potatoes. Cooked potatoes were rolled in yoghurt spiced with coriander. For some reason I didn’t like them at all and the potatoes were left uneaten. At first I thought that I would never try anything like this again, but nothing ventured, nothing gained as the saying goes. Continue reading “Rosemary potatoes”
In Finland Frankfurters with potato salad have belonged to New Year’s celebration for quite a long time – if not as a main meal but more like a late night dish when the party continues into the small hours of the night. Formerly Frankfurters used to be a special and expensive delicacy of the upper class people and it mostly belonged to two festive occasions: New Year and the 1st of May. Continue reading “Very tasty potato salad”
When I some time ago added a recipe for Brussels sprouts in creamy sauce to my English site, I wrote that it was even better than delicious. And indeed it was! But now I’m forced to say that Romanesco cauliflower prepared in a similar way seems to be even better if ever possible. Without further ado I can just say that this dish is really worth trying.
This casserole suits really well with all kind of meat, but it doesn’t necessarily need anything to serve on the side. Continue reading “Romanesco cauliflower baked in cream sauce”
If it is even possible to say that something is better than delicious, this casserole absolutely belongs in that category. At least it delights my palates so much that I’m almost forced to sigh with delight while eating. Continue reading “Brussel sprouts in cream sauce”
I have already mentioned that I’m not a friend of very hot dishes and I still have to practice eating these, but if you like both sauerkraut and spicy tastes this kimchi really is a good side dish for meat or fish. Continue reading “Sauerkraut kimchi”
